Application
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare, set out and install or repair internal timber flooring directly to joists and over sheet sub-floors and external decking to joists in domestic and commercial settings.
There are no specific licensing requirements directly associated with this unit, however, some jurisdictions require the holder of this unit to be licensed or certified and users should check with the relevant authorities. On-site work may require certification of general induction training covered by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007).

Evidence of Performance
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:
following work instructions, SOPs and safe work practices
identifying and interpreting specifications, drawings, standards and other relevant information to install timber flooring to joists
complying with site safety plan, WHS regulations, state/territory legislation, and organisational policies and procedures, including quality requirements
using tools, plant and equipment in a safe and effective manner
completing a minimum of:
one (1) installation of 19 mm strip timber flooring direct to joists to a full sized one bedroom home or equivalent (including a bedroom, lounge, kitchen and bathroom not less than 30 sqm)
one (1) installation of a ply or reconstituted timber sheet product directly to joists to a full sized one bedroom home or equivalent (including a bedroom, lounge, kitchen and bathroom not less than 30 sqm)
one (1) installation of 19 mm decking direct to joists (not less than 30 sqm)
removal and replacement of a board in an existing timber floor direct on joists
communicating and working effectively and safely with others.
Evidence of Knowledge
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
satisfy the assessor competency requirements that are in place at the time of the assessment as set by the VET regulator
have vocational competency in installing timber flooring to joists at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions that cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
